Battle for France – Introduction – May 10, 1940

After the overrunning of Belgium and crossing of the Meuse, the Manstein Plan required the German Army in the west to achieve three main objectives: a rapid Panzer advance to the coast beyond Abbeville on the Somme; the destruction of the mobile Franco-British Army in Flanders to the North of this 'Panzer Corridor'; and finally the overwhelming of the remains of the French Army south of the corridor.

The French were forced into headlong retreat all along their line. Paris and much of the line of the Loire were abandoned on 13 June. The French in and behind the Maginot Line were thus isolated and by-passed. The Line itself was broken at Saarbrucken and Colmar on 14 and 15 June. On 17 June Petain, who had become head of the French government, asked for an armistice which was granted on 22 June.
